Different forms of Animation
At least at a point in our lives, we just thought Animation is the coolest thing we’ve ever seen. animations attract children as well as adults which makes it easier to convey messages and stories and different ideas which can’t be conveyed in live-action pictures. Animations are categorized into many categories but they are 5 major animation techniques that a person interested in animation should know
• Traditional Animation
• 2D Animation
• 3D Animation
• Motion Graphics
• Stop Motion
Traditional Animation
Traditional animation is the very first animation technique in which each frame is drawn by hand. This is the only technique available and is widely popular until computers are easily available. This is the hardest technique in making an animation. Each frame is drawn by hand which makes it difficult to create. The French artist Emile Chol created the first animated film using what came to be known as traditional animation methods.
This is the original hand-drawn cel-animation where the artist literally has to draw thousands of images on special paper and have them photographed, frame by frame. Before the digital revolution, traditional animation was the quite normal in the animation industry. The best example of this kind of animation is Walt Disney. We as a child seen a lot of Disney’s animations in traditional techniques.
Traditional animation is a great skill to have in your arsenal, especially if you particularly enjoy traditional media: color pencils, glass painting, watercolors. The main drawback to traditional animation is that it’s a very lengthy process. However, don’t let the old-world flavor of this style put you off, as there’s plenty of inspiration to draw upon within this style of animation as it was said that old is always gold.
2D Animation
This animation is the upgraded version of traditional animation. this is vector-based animation in which art is controlled by vectors rather than pixels which makes it easier to make. It is the cheapest and easy-to-access technique. All You need is a basic understanding of keyframes and know how to use Adobe Animate CC.
It often allows cleaner, smoother animation because images are displayed and resized using mathematical values instead of stored pixel values. Before understanding the science behind vector animation, it’s important to know the difference between the two major graphic types: bitmap and vector graphics.
3D Animation
3D animation and visual effects are, quite simply, the way of the future. This type of animation is way more different from the previous animation techniques. 3D animation operates on different principles, and is more like puppetry than traditional animation. These are basically the computer-generated graphics which doesn’t mean the computer itself makes an animation. It is like digital but in a way more complex form.
For this, you need to learn how to digitally model a character, sculpt it perfectly and give it a skeleton that you can move and manipulate. You’ll have to pose the model at certain frames, and then let the computer do the rendering. CGI has become the norm for all blockbuster animated movies and in certain live-action sequences which requires a lot of VFX, because of its attention-to-detail and realism.
Motion Graphics
This visual effect technique involves moving graphic elements such as text or logos, mostly using software such as After Effects rather than creating characters. These works are Best for Those working in the advertising industry or doing multimedia projects, or even designing the opening of film titles.
Unlike the previously mentioned types of animation, motion graphics are not driven by characters or storylines. This art form focuses on the ability to move graphic elements, shapes, and text. This process is commonly used for things like television promotions, explainer videos, and animated logos. The skill set necessary for the other types of animation doesn’t apply to motion graphics because there’s no need to mimic body movement or facial expressions. Advertisements rely heavily on motion graphics and present plenty of career opportunities.
Stop Motion
Stop motion animation is very similar to traditional animation and 3d animation because it combines a series of still images that are slightly different to show movement. The largest difference is that stop motion uses photography and captures real objects. With stop motion, the artists take a photo of an object or scene and slightly moves the objects before taking another photo. The artist repeats this process until the scene is completed and uses each photo as a frame in the animation. It’s similar to a flip book with photos.
Stop motion is like traditional animation, except instead of drawing, you have clay models and a set that you have to carefully manipulate to produce animation. Stop motion can also be done with puppets, cut-outs, silhouettes, and even action figures. In the past, stop motion was used as a form of special effects for live-action films, and has largely been replaced by 3D animation and visual effects work.
